Redbud, my favorite tree

I told myself that I was going to write a blog post at least once every two weeks, and this is my way of sticking with it. I’m genuinely so tired of saying that I’m going to do something and just not doing it because of my chudlike tendencies.

Anyway, it’s finally fully springtime in Maryland, and if you’ve ever been anywhere near the DMV, you know that means that it’s the start of cherry blossom season. It’s inescapable, cherry blossom themed clothes, cherry blossom themed desserts, and even cherry blossom themed metro trains. As much as I love cherry blossoms, I think they overshadow a much cooler tree that is native to the DC area – the eastern redbud. Redbuds are probably one of my favorite trees, particularly in the way that they flower. Rather than your typical tree which flowers near the tips of branches (like a cherry blossom), redbud flowers emerge from the bark, almost reminiscent of something you’d find in a science fiction novel. The flowers are also a much deeper color than cherry blossoms, something closer to a deep, saturated magenta.

However, they are still overlooked. Why? Could it simply be a case of the Place, Japan effect? Or something else entirely?

Either way, the redbud will always have a special place in my heart. I love you, Redbud.

Some doodles of the flowers and leaves (Kept the white background for now bc idk how well the pink would show up on this site):
