My (Hopefully Lasting) Return

Hey there,

It’s been a while. Consistency is clearly not my thing. Hopefully one day it will become my thing.

The last time I posted was in the middle of last semester, and throughout an eventful finals season and summer I completely ignored the goal I set of posting at least once a month, if not more. I think this probably stemmed from the “pause” I gave myself at the beginning of my last finals season. I should’ve known better, I’ve found that it is very hard to get myself to recommit to a task after I’ve taken a break from it. Objects in motion will stay in motion type shit. It probably would have helped me manage my thoughts and time better if I had continued — I think I start going insane if I don’t make something for a long time. Anyways my point is that there’s not gonna be a finals week hiatus this year. Probably. Hopefully.

Not much has changed since the time I last posted, aside from the seasons. I still worked at the pool over the summer, and I am still working on getting better at talking to people. It’s … coming along. Slowly but surely. I’m also part of a bioinformatics research lab now, which is pretty cool. I feel a little bit out of place because most of the people there are grad students who know a lot more about this subject than I do, but I will learn. If anything, the process of applying to that lab has shown me that I do have the skills to at least get my resume through the application process and into an interview which is a good confidence builder.

Recently, I’ve been listening to a band called Trooper Salute. They’re an indie-rock band from Nagoya, Japan who describe themselves as “Symphonic rock”, but that might be a mistranslation as symphonic rock is associated with a very different sound in the west. I suppose the name rings true though as they make heavy use of wind instruments/orchestral instruments in their music while still sounding like an indie rock band. They remind me of the band Glass Beach (also great) in the way that their production is very “dense” and layered, leading to music that sounds almost theatric.

They’ve recently released their first album, “友達がいました”, which I love from start to finish. I don’t understand any of the lyrics as I don’t speak japanese but the production is amazing. There are moments in the saxophone/guitar/synth parts where I just think to myself “wow, I wish I could play like that”. They’re the kind of band that makes you want to start a band, especially if you play something other than the standard guitar/bass/drum combo. I highly recommend checking them out.

Until next time,

flyingfish

(Unfortunately no drawing this time, but I’ll work on one for the next post! College is hard!)
